Getting Older Gracefully

Simplymarrimye's Getting Older Gracefully - From left to right: Marri, DL, Malu and Mahlen
From left to right: Marri, DL, Malu and Mahlen

Being the eldest of four siblings, I became responsible at an early age. I took charge of the house when our mother was out and since our father was then working as an overseas contract worker in the Middle East, I had to be emotionally and mentally matured.

As I grew up, I learned a lot of things which made me a better person... An obedient daughter... a loving sister and a trusting friend. I remember, my mother would always tell me that I have to take care of my sisters, be dependable and lead by example.

At first we were only three with age gap of two years. We were fondly called “tatlong maria”  (three Marias ) because our names start with Maria. When our father decided to stop working abroad and stayed home for a while, mother got pregnant and after thirteen long years of patiently waiting , their prayers had been answered. They were blessed with a son…

Our wish had been granted. Happiness filled our hearts as this little boy brought joy and pride to our family. He became the center of our concern and deep affection.

I realized that GOD's blessings truly come as a surprise. Best things happen in HIS time.

And now, I have my own family with three children to raise. My sister Malu is still single with an impressive career while my youngest sister, Mahlen is married with three kids as well. My only brother DL is turning 28 this coming July and still an eligible bachelor.

Many people would say... we all look younger than our age. Flattering remarks indeed but we have our fair share of problems in life and there are obviously fine lines in our faces but we manage to handle ourselves pretty good. Actually, we're just fortunate to have inherited from our parents, a gene of a natural healthy glowing skin that makes us youthful looking.

I believe, AGE is just a number. As we get older, we have to be wiser. The years may add up and challenges may bring sad faces... but every morning is another day to rejoice and be thankful for.

  1. I totally agree. Age is just a number. What matters is how you've lived those years. And like you, I'd like to age gracefully as well.

Looking at the picture, I can't pinpoint who's the eldest. You all look like you are the same age :)

    1. Maturity is not measured by age. Some would mature early and still others never did until they reached old-age. Your sisters are so lucky to have you as well.

  3. I hear you, Sis. I am also the eldest of 3 broods but I am the only girl and to be given that huge responsibility in the family at a tender age made me a better person.

I have to agree with you. Age is but a digit. It is the blessings that we have acquired everyday and the experiences that made us wiser that we need to count and not the number, hahaha.

    1. Being the eldest seems to prepare us for early responsibilities and this is indeed an advantage to our part.

  5. Beautifully written Sis :-) you are 100% right, age is just a number
:-) What matter most is how you face problem and trials that may come in our lives. I remember my Dad said that we have to thank GOD everyday in our lives especially for giving us another fruitful year.
